URBAN HABITAT

Urban habitat is centred around how the culture and identity of people are evident in the built environment around them. It is a photographic study of colour and texture, of different cities around the world, capturing the subtleties of everyday life in the urban environment.

Exhibited at FV2 Architektur Büro & Galerie, Munich.

6th of June until 4th July, 2019

Novice Monk, Ladakh, 2016

Novice Monk. Ladakh, Indian Himalayas. 2016

“Ladakh translates as“the land of high passes”. This remote Buddhist region is a barren and inhospitable landscape with only a handful of inhabitants living in villages in the valleys or in white-washed monasteries perched on the mountainsides. In this harmonious composition, the young monk climbs the stairs into the stark sunlight. The colour and contrast of Novice Monk encapsulate the uniqueness of Ladakh’s dramatic aurora.”

“Four zebras walk home after they finish their shifts. In an amusing attempt to illustrate the benefits of road safety to local drivers in Sucre, zebra-costumed volunteers help people cross the street.”

“As our train came to a stop at a village station in the Shan State, local women approached the open windows between our train and the train that arrived from the opposite direction. The traditionally-dressed women were selling seasonal produce, which were cauliflowers.”

Pastel Blue, India, 2016

Pastel Blue, Rajasthan, India. 2016

“Colour is a distinctive characteristic of Rajasthan. Jaipur is the pink city, Jodhpur is the blue city and Jaisalmer the gold city. The decorative pastel blue on this doorway stands proud on the golden sandstone of Jaisalmer, while seamlessly corresponding with the woman’s sari and sandals.”

“During the Burmese New Year, called Thingyan, the Burmese government relaxes restrictions on gatherings and water is drowsed over one another during this 5-day long holiday. Traditionally, the sprinkling of water was intended to metaphorically"wash away" one's sins of the previous year. The moment captured in this image shows the youth of Yangon enjoying the festivities”.

“Whether coincidental or not, throughout colonial Trinidad harmoniously-matched colours present themselves. The woman walking into this scene dons an orange and red headwear piece, as well as a blue-pattened dress that corresponds perfectly with the architecture and the car.”

“One would think this scene is staged rather than being well-timed street photography. The owner had tied up the five dogs and popped back indoors briefly, awarding me with enough time to capture the dogs all looking towards me. The result provides curiosity and mystery.”
